Jewelry pricing calculator
Most makers undercharge because they price from materials alone. Enter your real costs — including your time — and get wholesale and retail prices with a jewelry-industry margin check.
Cost basis: $44.56 per piece ($18.75 labor + $18.00 materials + $5.81 overhead + $2.00 packaging)
Buyers judge a $133.69 price tag by the photo before they read a word. Studio photography adds $30–150 per image to every SKU; calculate your photo costs or see the data on photos and conversion.
The pricing formula
Cost basis = materials + (minutes ÷ 60 × hourly rate) + packaging + overhead %. Wholesale = 2× cost basis (the keystone floor stockists expect). Retail = 2.5–4× cost basis depending on positioning: 2.5x is the minimum viable for handmade, 3x is standard, 4x+ is fine jewelry. If your retail margin lands under ~60%, marketplace fees and ads will squeeze you.
From price to profit
A correct price is step one; keeping it is step two. Check what each channel takes with the markup calculator and the Etsy fee calculator, then find your monthly sales quota with the break-even calculator. And remember what makes a higher price stick: listings whose photos look like the price — see the conversion data.
Frequently asked questions
How do I price handmade jewelry?
Add materials, labor (your time at a real hourly rate), overhead, and packaging to get your cost basis. Wholesale price is 2x cost basis; retail is 2.5–4x. Handmade jewelry typically uses 3x; fine jewelry 4x or more.
What is the standard jewelry markup?
Keystone pricing (2x cost) is the wholesale floor. Retail markup for handmade jewelry is usually 2.5–3x cost basis, and fine jewelry commonly reaches 4x or higher to cover stockist discounts, fees, and marketing.
Why does my retail margin matter?
A healthy jewelry retail margin is around 60%. Below that, marketplace fees (Etsy takes roughly 10–25% after ads), payment processing, and marketing costs eat your profit — and you have no room to offer wholesale.
What's the most common jewelry pricing mistake?
Pricing from materials alone and treating your labor as free. If a pendant takes 90 minutes and you value your time at $25/hour, that's $37.50 of real cost — omit it and every markup calculation downstream is wrong, wholesale becomes impossible, and growth means working more hours for the same money.
